NATURAL VARIATION IN NATURAL STONE

Natural stone is a natural product derived from the earth and therefore is NOT going to be consistent or uniform by any means.

It is important to also be very aware that what you see on the Showroom floor can be very different to what you will end up with on your project due to the difference in batch, meaning at the time the showroom floor was laid, the stone was extracted from an entirely unique section of the quarry and therefore can have different mineral composites. This means that your stone can look completely different to what you see in a showroom.

The picture below was taken on one of our projects which was mechanically cleaned without the use of acid, alkaline or any chemicals. You will notice that there are unusual markings on select pavers, these markings are natural variation present within the stone, they weren’t even noticeable during installation because when the bluestone is cut it is covered in slurry / dust and once installed they get covered in grout and general construction dirt and grime.

acid is not the culprit

I receive at least one call every week, from customers who are disappointed with the markings on the stone and accuse us of using chemicals on their job. Even when we do use chemicals on a project, they are not going to cause these markings. You will notice that each marking as pictured above is restricted to each individual paver. No marking is overlapping indicating that this is in fact natural variation in the stone. On occasion the marks can appear to be overlapping however it is generally just by chance that the pavers were coincidentally placed next to each other.

WE’RE EXPERTS, AND THIS IS WHAT WE DO

Currently at Prestige Surfaces, we undertake up to 120 projects every month, we are very good at what we do and we see more natural stone than most so called “experts”.

Once a client of ours received a report from a “stone expert” who was engaged by their client disputing their work, this so called expert was actually a qualified plumber, after his name and title at the end of the report it stated this along with 20 years of plumbing experience. Unfortunately this is the nature of the industry and it can be beyond frustrating for those working within it.

The purpose of this article is to create awareness for people that are thinking about using natural stone on their project, and also as a tool to assist installers working with stone on their projects that are experiencing disputes with their clients. It is probably the most individual and unique and magnificently stunningly extraordinarily beautiful building material available within the Construction industry and has been so for thousands of years. Not to mention once treated by Prestige Surfaces it is generally a very durable substrate.

HOW TO ENSURE YOU GET WHAT YOU ENVISION

First and foremost, you need to trust your installer, don’t try to source stone on your own to save a few dollars… There is probably a reason why it is cheap and trust me, you are better off spending a little more on a reputable source.

A FINAL NOTE

On behalf of Prestige Surfaces and the amazing guru’s we have on board ensuring that absolutely no stone goes unsealed in the most liveable city in the world, I would like to encourage you to embrace natural stone and all of its beauty on your new project!

Please do not hesitate to contact us at anytime to assist you with all of your stone surfaces.

Thanking you,

Matt Nash
